Wellington, Sept 3. In the House, to-day, the Minister of Public Works promised to shew nextsession the results of inquiries relative to the utility of New Zealand timber for public works.

The Premier announced that a compromise between the New Zealand and Otago Universities is probable. The Premier has promised a steam service between Wellington and Auckland, via the East Coast.

The House has agreed to a reservation of 20,000 acres for a university at Tauranga, which may be used for settlement. ; Further papers relative to the dismissal of Worgan have been agreed to. The adjourned debate on the Provincial Loans Bill lasted till half-past two this, morning. Rolleston, Wood, Reid, Fitzgerald, Johnston, Steward, the Minister of Public Works, Reynolds, Fox, White, and Andrew spoke. The Premier replied, and promised to introduce a clause in Committee restricting the interest of loans to six per cent. Nearly all the members hoped the Bill would be altered in Committee. The second reading was carried on the voices, without one dissentient.

The Speaker said he had looked up authorities and found that, though the Gold-mining Bill had been thrown out in Committee, it was competent for members to move its re-committal. The Bill will be re-committed on Friday.
