' Captain Underwood, of the Alhambra ; Captain Stewart, of the Lennox Castle ; and the carpenters of both vessels report that the ship William Tapscott is seaworthy, but recommend repairs. The engineer of the Alhambra surveyed the vessel and reported to the same effect. The inquiry into the grounding of the s.s. Lady Bird at Manukau is proceedUng. t Grahamstown, Aug. 39. The following are the fortnightly returns received :— Kurunui, 4086z ; Golden Crown, 220z ; Moanatairi, 1250z. Timaru, Aug. 30. An inquiry has been held regarding the late wrecks. The captain of the Duke of Edinburgh is exonerated, and the accident is attributed to the heavy sea and to the vessel being deficient ■•; in cable. The hull of the Fairy Queen has been auci tioned. It brought L 136.
The skull of a boy named Rowley has been fractured by a stone supposed to have been thrown by, another boy.
