THE STRIKE.
[to the editob.] Sir— There were some remarks made on Saturday night last at the "Volunteer Hall with ' regard to the "wages given to the quarry-men. The speakers never thought to remark that quarry-men^ on ! all public works get a shilling a day more I than pick-and-shovel-men. Not only that; there is the danger, and many other | things to be considered. Now, sir, eleven or twelve shillings sound very well ;• but, with wet; weather and broken time, the average wages in the quarry are no more than about L 2 12s per week: per man, and after a man takes his .board and washing, which amounts to LI 10s per week, ;it -leaves-; a balance; 'of. Ll/2s. : ;Th(9 truth of this letter, . I think, will be proved upon reference to the, paymaster's books since; the quarry was first started up to the present time. I.i . You would oblige the men on thri^BOtective works by giving this note inseHni inyourpaper. lam, &c.,- .•-••— . >QUAKRY-MAN. Greymouth, Aiig. '3l."
