THE ALLEGED TRUCK SYSTEM.

[TO THE EDITOB.j Sir — You will oblige by inserting these few lines in your journal, in order to give a flat contradiction to the statement made by Mr Butler, in his letter which appeared in your paper of the 15th inst. He says that he discharged me simply because I was not fit to do a fair day's work. . Now, sir, I challenge him to deny his own words, when I asked him to take back his tools. He then told me I was as good a man as was on the works ; but that if he informed me why I was discharged that T would not be surprised myself, and I will ask any honest man — " If they think that the course Mr Butler has adopted towards me was straightforward and manly. Mr Butler is quite correct in stating that I found no fault with the price of the stores, except the breadj neither did I do so at the meeting held at the Town Hall, it. was simply the prices of the tools, viz., picks, shovels, axes, &c, which I objected to in orcter to give publicity to a growing evil. I will now explain the reason I did not produce the pass-book at the meeting. When I went to the store to get settled with, the storeman scratched my name off the book, and inserted my mate's name instead, and threw it on the shelf behind the counter, and I never saw it since. In conclusion, I will state that I have never been known as an agitator, but was always willing to stand up and speak the truth, irrespective of party or influence. I now challenge Mr Butler to deny the above statements, either in public or otherwise. By your inserting the above, you will oblige, — Yours, &c, Aechtbaid Leslie.
