Mr Bathgate, in replying to a deputa. tion relative to the formation of a volunteer corps at Lawrence, condemned the present force as quite useless for any practical purpose, Baying that Artillery and Naval Brigades only were wanted, and the others were shooting clubs. A new Volunteer Act would be introduced, which would require all the corps of each | Province to assemble at a central place for fourteen days' drill each year. Oats, scarce and dear at 2s 10s to 3s 2d ; wheat, steady at 45,6 dto 4s 9d. Christchugh, May 2. Breadstuff's unaltered ; wheat, 4s 3d to 4s 4£d ; flour, a steady demand at Lll ; oats, risen to 3s 6d ; butter, in good demand at 9d. A special session of the Provincial Council opened to-day. The Superintendant recommended ihe extension of the railway to Porter's Pass.
Auckland, May 2. Mr Yogel is confined to bed by gout. Consequently he will be unable to visit Nelson to open the railway works.
