The nomination of a member for the Grey district in the Nelson Council takes place to-day (Thursday), at the Ahaura. The only candidate having any chance of election who has yet been mentioned is Mi J. D. Pinkerton. A requisition has been presented to Mr Pinkerton, and was intended for publication in our present number, but, in consequence of the absence of mail communication on convenient days, neither it nor our Grey Valley correrpondent's letter has come to hand. The Went Coast Times states that Mr Frew, late County Engineer, has been offered, by the General Government, the appointment of Engineer of the Brunner Railway line, which will shortly be commenced. The work of widening the Ross road is nearly completed, and will probably be passed before the end of the week. One thousand and fifty-five persons have lodged claims dnring the past three months to have their names placed on the Electoral Roll for the .Buller district. The Rev. G. H. Johnstone has resigned the curacy of Christ Church, Nelson. The Examiner says of Mr Johnstone : —His kindliness, and the hearty interest he has taken in the welfare of all with whom he has been brought into contact, will cause his presence among us to be missed by men of all denominations, and even by those of none. Michael Dalton is authorised by the Superintendent of Nelson to charge, for five yeais, it. sixpenny toll over the footbridge erected by him over the Inangahua river at Reeffcon, and Frederick R. Protection has been granted to Jas. Olive and Alexander Shearer for a tramway to be constructed along the east aide of Palmerston street, Westport, from Wallabi street to Wakefield street. It is notified that, after the expiration of two months, it is intended to grant a lease of one acre, two roods, and three perches of land to the Little Wonder Company, next the Alpine Company's claim, Lyell ; of nine acres to the Hercules Company, next the Golden Ledge Company's claim, Murray Creek ; and six acres to the Nil Desperandum Company, situated at Rainy Creek. The following gold-mining lease in the Grey district is declared forfeited :— Lease dated July 1, 1872, to James Keeney and others (No. 64 G), of nine acres and three roods. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, Hokitika, on Tuesday, before G. G. FitzGerald, Esq., R.M., Louisa O'Brien on remand from Saturday last, on a charge of setting fife to Shaffrey's Hotel, was, after hearing the evidence of Mrs Brierly, committed for trial. The following statement of the affairs of the North Westland district, handed to the Charleston Herald by the Provincial Secretary, shows the nourishing state of Oddfellowship. The total worth of the district in December last was L 1373 16s ll^d; total receipts during the year, L 894 17s ; expenditure, including sick pay, medical, funeral, and other expenses, L 663 3s sd. The number of members is 203. Taking into consideration its recent establishment the district will bear favorable comparison with perhaps any in the Colony. The following telegram has been received by the Mayor of Hokifcika from the Minister of Public Works: — "Waimea Race. — Your telegram of 10th received. Government have only taken the precautions they consider necessary before entering upon so large a work. Engineer-in-Chief receives final instrncHons to-day to prepare contract plans, i and put work in hand immediately. — Edward Richardson." In the Warden's Court, Westport, William Farrell applied for a tail race at lloehfort. I The application was objected to by William Wattman, ou the plea that the race as applied for would wash away his chimney. The applicant said tke chimney was "abandoned." The objector said he had erected the chimney two months ago, and intended as soon as he had time to build a, house on to it. The Court told him that it was unwise to have loose chimneys knocking about in the way of miners. Application granted. A miuer named Charles Olsen has arrived iv Hokitika from the Upper Totara district, where he has been working for the last seven years, and he brought with him some specimens of auriferous quartz, which he states he obtained from a reef 2ft in thickness. From the appearance of the stone, the Times is inclined to believe that it will prove to be payable. The machinery for the Fiery Cross and Just in Time claims at Boatman's, has been sent up the Bnller river. The machine will be so constructed that thirty heads of stampers can be used if at any future occasion should require so many, but at present it is contemplated to employ only fifteen. The wheel will be 45 feet in diameter wi*h 4 feet breast. A race haa been cut and a copious supply of water in the driest season is secured. Base coins arc said to be in circulation in the Colony in the shape of sovereigns, bearing a strong resemblance to those recently issued from the London Mint. There is a dragon on the face, and on the reverse side is the word " Hanover." At the Donogliue's Lagoon, on Saturday last, says the Jtoss Guardian, an amount of bravery was displayed by a little fellow, named James John Yell, in rescuing his youngest brother from a watery grave, which is quiie surprising in one so young. It seems that the three sous of Mr Yell, named John, Edward, and Jeremiah, aged respectively four years and a half,, three years and a half, and two and a half, went down the Donoghue road towards the beach, and on arriving at the la«oon, the eldest and youngest got on to a log floating in the water. Owing to the tide coming in quick the log went out into deep water, and at this juncture the little fellow slipped off over head. The eldest boy jumped in after him, while Edward, the second eldest, ran to give the alarm, but on

assistance arriving it was not required, as by that time the heroic little fellow had landed bis brother safe on the bank. A distance of about 35ffc had to be traversed from the place where the accident occurred before the shore was reached, and the> little fellow, must be possessed of considerable pluck, or otherwise neither of the brothers would have got out alive. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board, on Tuesday, Mr William Harris applied by his agent, Mr F. A . Learmonth, for a pasturage licence over 600 acres of land at the Teremakau. Granted, LlO paid.
