Continuing my remarks of Saturday, now that the entries for the Telegraph Slakes and District Plate have been made, 1 will endeavor, as Frank Western says, again toj" speak aspoke"to thegentlepublic of Greymouth, anent these two events, and a few things in general. For the first named event I see there are four entries, Creeping Jenny, Yatterina, Slander, and Prima Donna. lam sorry to hear that Mr M'Gee, her truly sporting owner, has not been enabled to bring her on, through her meeting with a mishap on board ship, when coming from Wellington to Nelson. The Held will thus be narrowed down to three, and if Yatterina does start it will only be to open her pipes for the Handicap. The race will thus be left to Slander and Prima Donna, and I can only advise my friends to pin their faith upon the old mare, as the difference in weight for age cannot, in my opinion, militate at all against her chance. For the District Plate, a race that at one time was the most interesting of all in futurity, the field is now reduced to two, as all the rest have gone, in the expressive words of an agricultural sportsman, "crooked." The match however between §;>ptumis and Lacenfeed will be looked upon with great interest, as. tho difference in weight here will bo ml, «ach being aged. The distance is only one and a half miles and should be Licenffied's if she is in anything lik« condition ; she cm stay to this an I v lit to win something fc ':• her plucky owner, but, as like her sex is f'coy and hard to please,'' besides being most uncertain. I
must select the slower, but staying Septimus to pull off the money. As for the Trotting Race, out of eight entries, your readers can pick and. choose for themselves. Pumpkins is a known performer, having been beaten by Polly a few daya ago. He is, however, in experienced hands now and will be well ridden. Ranger has been winning trotting matches up country, Creeping Jenny can travel, Fireworks is known to be good, Tommy and Dolly Varden are to me unknown, while Dolly aud Super have been constantly packing, and are only spoken of as fair country hacks. To attempt to predict the winner would be folly, and I can only advise all the names being put into a hat and stick to the first horse you draw. I was very glad to see that Dick Tnrpin arrived last evening along with his owner, Mr M'Gee, after making an overland journey from Hokitika, where he was landed from the Kennedy yesterday morning. It appears to me that the captain of this vessel shewed a very great want of good taste, tact, and judgment in carrying thi3 horse past the port on the eve of an important meeting, and when his engagements were so heavy. Had he only put in, landed the horse and passengers, he could easily have gone on to Hokitika, and been there in sufficiently good time to have entered upon the tide on which he attempted to do. As it is, he has seriously damaged Mr M'Gee's prospects ; has entailed inconvenience to his many passengers who were coming here ; and has in all probability debarred them from seeing the first of to-day's races run for. An evident want of consideration has been shown, and it is much to be regretted. I hear that Mozzel is to be raffled for this evening, hia owner having determined to part with him. His injury is of a very slight nature, and is not of a permanent kind. It only requires a few weeks' rest to make him as well as ever. He is well bred, by Malton, out of Barbelle, i 3 only four years old, has never done any work, is of sound constitution, and a rare stayer. He is, besides, an improving horse, and I, for one, should be sorry to see him leave the district. Whoever gets him will find in him a -profitable investment next season.
