NEW RIVER DISTRICT.

(from our ami correspondent.) ...... February 19. There is every probability of the two large water races, the Now River and the Hibernian, being pushed ahead, as the shareholders have received the first moiety of the subsidy so long promised by the General Government. It ;js understood that some portions of the work will be let by tender, , instead of day labor. Too . much expedition cannot, however, well be made, so that these races, can be utilised before another summer for ihe dry weather proves forcibly the necessity of having a plentiful supply. At present, and it might be almost said without exaggeration, nearly the whole of the miners have had very little water since Christmas, consequently the returns of gold Wr© boon vory limited- This Bhows how imperatively necessary it will be for both companies to have reservoirs for the storage of water when it is plentiful, to keep the various parties supplied during dry seasons. The Hibernian Compan y intend to use their water immediately,- and to let the formation of the remaining portion of their race. After the several years' work that they have had in racecutting, it will be an agreeable change to turn their hard work to profitable account. The locality where they commence operations is Little Cock-eye, and it is sanguinely expected that they will be well rewarded for their labor. The New River Race Company have lately moved tlieir camp near to Limestone. They have a good length •of fluming to erect, the sawing for which will be done by contract, and all things progressing favorably Limestone proper will be reached in some six months. This part has now very few miners, and some of the old identities are said to be contemplating a move to pastures new. . The pack track from Maori Creek to German Gully is now about completed. Some sections have already been passed, whilst others required a little alteration. The making of this track w^rgreatly conduce to the prosperity of the district, but this depends on the action of the County Council in making a dray road tvoaiMarsden to Maori Greek. Week after The people complain and petition, and nothing is done. This delay is injurious to the district, and places it at a great disadvantage compared with the {acuities that exist in conveying goods from Greymouth to Maori Gully. Surely the requirements of the New River ought to nave some attention; for six months complaints have been made about this road, and if there, is not a little more alacrity winter will be here before there 8 anything done. Let the metnber for the district use his usual energy and insist that action should be at once taken in the matter.
