COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS,

By telegraph we are informed of the return of Mr Barff for the Arahura district, and Mr Robinson for Kanieri. Particulars of the result -at each polling place in the Kanieri district appear in the West Coast Times of yesterday, but those from the Arahura are not complete. The following were the results in the Kanieri district : Robinson. Reynolds.' Kanieri 96 13 Paddock 8 1 Blue Spur 20 10 Woodstock ... 53 34 Arahura ... ... 9 3 186 61 Majority for Robinson— l2s. Thfl returns to hand from the Arahura give the following results : — ' Barff. White. Seddon. Goldsboro ... 116 24 24 Stafford ... 114 77 11 German Gully 7 2 0 237 103 35 Of the proceedings in Hokitika, on the polling day, the Times says : — There was no very great display of placards, the candidates seeming to think that there was not much to be gained by that means. In one placard the electors were invited to vote for Mr Bonar as being " a tried man." In another the suffrages of the electors were solicited for Mr Hoos, " a decisive policy, and no self-interest." Mr Cassius had two placards. In one " prompt payment of Westland's debts" was the alluring inducement held out, and in the other his being " an enterprising Giti^en" was mentioned in very la,rge letters. Mr flinchelifife described himself in one placard as the "butcher boy," and in another as the " working-man's candidate, and the poor man's friend." Some good humored fun and practical jokes of a mild nature were practised to enliven jthe tedium of the day. One of these gonsistpd in pasting on the candidate's cards slips 'cut opt from advertisements. o«». ;r,atance jvilLjßuffice as an example. The cards of one candidate were,- by-tW-means we have mentioned, made to appear as inviting the electors to "vote for Mr Hinchcliff and skin diseases, scrofula, eruptions, &c, &c." Towards 4 o'clock a very la,rge r crowd had gathered, and naturally "there was a great deal of noise, and evep one or two smaty fights, but there* was very little damage done. "
