WRECK OF THE BARQUE CITY OF NEWCASTLE. BOAT WITH PASSENGERS STILL MISSING. WRECK OF THE S.S. WALLABI. [new zealand press association.] Wellington, Nov. 16. Information ha 3 been received that the .barque City of Newcastle, which left Wellington for Newcastle on the 9 th, was wrecked somewhere near Wellington Head. The boat and several of the crew were picked up by the s.s. Taranaki near Picton. The boat containing six female passengers and a good crew is still missinsr. The passengers. were Mr and Mrs J. G. Fox, Mr Abbott of the Armed Constabulary, Mrs H. J. Pilcher, Mrs and Master Jones, and Mis 3 Cameron. The Taranaki returned to the. scene of the disaster, but found no remains of the vessel. The Rangatira haß gone to the rescue. . Sunday, Nov. 17. i The Rangatira arrived from Picton near midnight, being boarded by Captain Bain in Tory Channel. No trace of the missing boat has been discovered. Messrs Smith, Bowler, and Palmer are supposed to be landed near the north entrance. Six men were left on the wreck. The mate swam ashore with a line. Abbott, a passenger, and the ship's cook were drowned trying to reach the land. The remainder are safe. The wreck is supposed to have been caused by the captain mistaking Wellington Head for the Mana Island light. The Rangatira, with the rescued seamen and mate started at four o'clock to resume the search for the missing boat. The s.s Napier, from Wanganui, arrived at two o'clock. She saw nothing of the missing boat, although she was on the liok-out. The Karigatira has returned and brought back all the survivors. She saw no signs of the missing boat, although she examined the coast carefully with boats. Wheeler, captain of the Taranaki, says that the City has gone to pieces. Not a plank is left. The vessel is insured. Invercabgill, Nov. 16. The steamer Wallabi entered the river yesterday and moored alongside the new jetty, when the tide receded she lay amidships on a sand hummock and broke her Hack, Her sides are also breaking up. ■'■-'
