The Education Bill's second reading was carried in the Assembly by 32 to 21. Alderman O'Grady has been elected Mayor of the city for the ensuing year. Sir James M'Culloch's appointment as Agent-General has been sent home. The Mayor's ball was attended by 1200 guests. ■-.■.. A horrible murder has occurred at Alma, near Maryborough. A man named Firinigan was killed by another named Whittington, through jealousy. A case of infanticide occurred at Prahran by a servant girl named Pillar. The North-eastern Railway to Longwood will be opened in a month's time. Coal has been discovered in the Gipps Land district. The Melbourne Meat Preserving Company has declared a dividend of ten per cent., and the Colonial Bank of eight per cent. • : The child murderer, Elton, is now pronounced sane, and has been sentenced to imprisonment for life. Nearly all the space has been applied for in the exhibition. Some good beetroot has been produced by the Beetroot Sugar Company. The Asterope, from London to Nelson, was spoken, ninety days out, all well. - New Zealand wheat, 6s 6d ; oat 3, 3s 4d. Three, cargoes of sugars had arrived, but business is moderate. ■ ■ Sydney, Oct. 15. Further difficulties are apprehended at the Newcastle collieries, in consequence of the eight hours' movement. Another attempt has been made at Bugar planting atlllawarra. Diggers are returning in numbers from Townsville. A Conference of the Anglican Church Synod has commenced in the Cathedral. The Bishop of Adelaide preached the opening sermon. The meeting of the Australian Steam Navigation Company, relative to tendering for the Californian Service, was adjourned. , The quarterly revenue statement shows an increase of L 250,000. The high price of cattle continues. Adelaide, Oct. 18. It is reported that alluvial diggings have been discovered at Yam Creek. The Treasury Loan Bill is passed. The Executive has been appointed to the management of the University. The Government has accepted the tender of the Netherlands India Company to run a »steamer from Java to Port Darwin. The first message is expected early in November. The Congregational Union passed a resolution in favor of a -comprehensive Education Bill. Meetings of disappointed diggers have been held at Palmerstbn, demanding assistance. The acting resident Commissioner ia communicating with the Government. \yheat unchanged and very dull.
