PAROA ROAD BOARD.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board was held on Thursday last, all the members being present. The correspondence consisted of a letter from the Colonial Secretary's Office, stating that it was not intended to grant any subsidy to Road Boards during the prespnt financial year. . A letter from the Hon. H. H. Lahman, referring the Board to the County Treasurer for payment of the amount of Mr Campbell's contract ; and one from the County Secretary on the same subject. [As to the Colonial Secretary's letter, it must be remarked that it issued from the late Superintendental Ministry, and that since it wa3 written the position of affairs has so changed that the letter cannot now be taken for a definite refusal to grant a further subsidy.] The. Secretary was again instructed to make application for the contract money according to Mr Lab man's letter. The Chairman expressed his regret that such difficulties were thrown in the way of the Board's usefulness, believing that the objection raised was a factious one, got up for the purpose of obstruction. The Chairman then, pursuant to notice, moved— "That a general rate of one shilling in the pound be struck on all rateable property." On this motion a great deal of discus- * sion arose ; the division on it was equal, and .the Chairman gave his. casting vote against the motion, not choosing to cany it simply by his privilege. Mr Barnhill moved — " That this ' Board strongly condemns the action taken by the late Stafford Ministry in refusing further aid to Road Boards for the construction of useful works." The motion was carried. After which, the Chairman^ with a suitable speech, moved — "That th*\ General Government . be urj?ed to co»L struct a dray road from Paroa toMarsden, in order thus to complete the high road from Greymouth to Ross." Mr Colton was in favor of the motion, as it was simply to embody a suggestion which could not involve the Board in any pecuniary difficulties. It was declared carried; after which the Board adjourned. '
