The following items of news were yes. terday brought by the s.s. Alexandra, from Sydney to Auckland. They are a week older than those received by the Claud Hamilton : — Auckland, Oct 4. The Alexandra has arrived with the Australian and Californian mails for the Nebraska, which was detained for them, and was on the point of departure when the Alexandra arrived. The Nebraska haa since left. Sydney, Sept. 23, Parliament is summoned to meet, on the sth November. Three colonial tenders are likely for the Californian mail service. Melbourne, Sept. 23. John Seaton died from violence inflicted by a man named Oshed, who is since arrested. The Education Bill has been denounced from the altar of the Roman Catholic Church. On the question in the Legislative Assembly, whether the Government would bring back the destitute Victorians from the Townsville ? Mr Francis promised to communicate with the Queensland Government on the subject and consider the question. , The Exhibition opens on November 6. The Government is considering the advisableness of voting L2OOO as. the Victorian contribution towards a permanent annexe at South Kensington. The sentence of Weechurch has-been commuted to imprisonment for life, the first three years in irons. Breadstuff* are unaltered, buyers offering 4s for new wheat ; good wheat, 5s 6d ; flour, Ll2 10a to Ll3 103, without a transaction. ... Brisbane, Sept. 23. A telegram from Rockharnpton states that the return rush from Townsville has set in, and fears are entertained of disturbances by the rowdy portion of the diggers who had arrived from southern colonies bound for Townsville.
