BOROUGH COUNCIL.
♦ „ The usual meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall last night. Present : The Mayor in the chair, Councillors Smith, Woolcock, M'Gregor, Coates, Dupre, Moore, Glenn, Masters. Messrs Glenn, Masters, and Moore were introduced as newly elected members, and they took the usual declaration and their seats. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was read from the Manager of tho Bank of New South Wales, asking that the overdraft should be reduced to the sum agreed upon. — Received. The Town Clerk stated that tho sum would be reduced as asked next month. A conversation" took place as to the recent proceedings in the Resident Magistrate's Court regarding the legality of the Council's regulations, and, on the motion of Mr Moore, a committee consisting of the Mayor, Councillors Moore and Masters was appointed to revise the bye-laws and regulations under, the Municipal Corporations Act, to report at next meeting, with power to call in legal assistance. A letter was read from Messrs Lloyd and Buck, enclosing a cheque for LSO as a guarantee of good faith that if tenders were called for the decking of the coal wharf they had applied for, the work would be carried out. — A telegram was read from Mr O'Connor, assenting to the new wharf being used for coal depots. A letter was read from Mr Newton, as legal adviser for Mr Hildebrand, asking payment of LIOO aa damages for landiug cattle on his section, oh Richmond Quay, near Johnston street, otherwise legal proceedings would be taken. It was resolved that the letter be "received, and the opinion of Mr Perkins be taken before replying to the same. A letter was read from Messrs Lapham and Nichol asking repayment of the sum of L4O spent in fixing stand-pipes in Tainui street. Over LIOO was spent in I the work, and all that was asked , for was ■the amount of the overdraft now remaining at the Bank. Mr Masters moved that a bill at six months be given for the amount. Mr Woolcock seconded the motion. The Mayor moved as'an amendment — " That a committee be formed, consisting of Messrs' Masters, Glenn, and M'Gregor, to inquire into the cost of erecting stand-pipes in various parts of the . town, and recommend those that would be useful in, case of fire j also to state what amount tnose parties who went to the first outlay should bere-imbursed." The amendment was lost, and the motion carried, the terms of tho bill being altered to twelve months,
