The English cable is still interrupted, and the operations of the Investigator are retarded near Java owing to the monsoon. A Bill has been introduced into the Council by Government for the suppression of betting and gaming houses. The Mining on Private Property Bill has nearly passed the Committee of Assembly. No mails will in future be made up here for California. A disastrous fire occurred at the Maribyrnong estate. Three valuable brood mares, Lady Heron, Gildermire, and Agitation, were burned in their boxes. Loss about L3OOO. Another Australian Conference ia projected. Kimberley's despatch is to be considered amongst other matters. Victoria will not be represented. The Government have under consideration the propriety of subsidising telegraphic communication from Europe to the Victorian Press* The Clydesdale horse Baronet has been purchased for L 520, and Baron Clyde for Llls for New Zealand. Sailed— August 18th, Aborigine, for Hokitika. Sydney, August 22. The Admiralty has bought a Bmall schooner, the first of a fleet, for the suppression of the slave trade. She will be manned from the squadron. The Hero was released from quarantine on Monday, and sailed for Melbourne. Captain Armstrong has been committed for murder, and the remainder of the crew of the Carl for felonious assault. The steamer Saxonia was successfully raised. Snow fell near Sydney and country on Tuesday. The A.S.N. Company called a special meeting of the shareholders to consider the advisability of starting a California line. Adelaide, August 22. Commissioners have been appointed for the London Exhibition. A telegraph station has been opened at Barrow's Creek, 1200 miles from Adelaide. The Governor ha 3 left on a visit to Melbourne and Sydney. A company is in course of formation to grow rice and tobacco in the northern territory. Parliament adjourned till the 24th of September. Tasmania, August 22. The House has been prorogued by proclamation previous to immediate dissolution.
