THE NON-EXECUTIVE NELSON EXECUTIVE.
[to the editor.] Sir— l think sufficient time has elapsed since the passing of the Appropriation Act of the Nalson Provincial Council, for the Executive Government to have carried out the promises which they made the Council of oalling for tenders for making the road from the Arnold to this place, and 1 think that it is high time they should have their memories jogged on this matter, as well as the road to the Amuri. The money for both these works was voted unanimously by the Council than two months ago, and it seems that the Executive are bent on carryiug out their old principle of taissez /<sfc»in this as in all other matters connected with the South- West Gold Fields. Wje are. told that the Provincial Government of Nelson . expend all the available revenue produced by the gold field? part of this Province within the gold fields. This | assertion is said to have been made by the Superintendent in his place on the General Assembly, and as, since the pass* ing of the Appropriation Act of last sea* sion, nothing but official salaries has been spent, I should be glad to know if we are to look for any public works being carried out in accordance with the votes of the Council. How long will the people of the West Coast Gold Fields be satisfied to pay, as they are doing now, all the official salaries of the whole Province of Kelson, and not even have an opportunity of saying whether they will become contractors for making the roads their representatives sanctioned, and had reasonable grounds to think could be made out of the revenue which the district has to pay. Surely any other form of Government could not possibly be more injurious to the community than that of the present alien one of Nelson. - I see, Sir, that the Nelson Government are said to have commenced canvassing for signatures to a memorial which' asserts there is no discontent existing in the West Coast. When a Government is driven to such expedients, it is iame we put out our real strength and openly avowed our opinions. I am, &a, Miner. Ahaura, August 6.
A correspondent of the Westport Times reports that at Addison's Flat, during the week, three shares have changed hands. Two shares in what is known as O'Toole's claim have been sold at L3OO each. This claim is situated to the westward of the re* cognised live of gold on Addison's, and seems to be a distinct lead of gold. This claim v in excellent working order, paying Lsoper man per month. , Books have been ordered for the public libraries in the Province, of Otago to the value of about L2OOO, ■ .- The first, consign, inent is expected to arrive in about four months.
