'7 vi The debate on Mr Collins motion to reduce the gold duty to 2s was resumed by Mr White, who warmly supported the motion. . m Mr Luckie opposed the motion, as 1 the reduction was likely to prove injurious to the miners themselves, by lessening the amount available for road-making. . Mr Sheehan supported the motion, and quoted figures showing that in Auckland the expenditure on Gold Fields had ex* ceeded receipts from them by L14,()Q0.
Messrs Tribe, O'Neill, and O'Conor supported the motion, the latter pointing out that the opposition proceeded mah^jU from Nelson, whose gold fields, it was hoped, would soon be removed from provincial control. . .
Mr Yogel withdrew his amendment, stating that the Government would still divide against the motion, in order that the responsibility of making the reduction might rest on those who would be affected by it, the gold duty being Provincial revenue.
On a division the motion was carried by 34 toll. ;■■■■■■•=■

Mr Yogel then stated the Government would no longer oppose the reduction, but would either support a Bill to effect it, if such Bill were introduced by Mr Collins, or they would themselves! introduce it.; A Mr Collins requested the Government to take charge of the measure.
