. Wellington, Aug. 6. Mr George Butt died suddenly last night. An inquest is to be held. Auckland, Aug. 6.

Another case of small-pox has occurred. The infant of Mrs Brown, matron of the Hospital, has been attacked. The child is three months old. The authorities have placed the mother in the pest-house. Other variola patients have been removed to the block-house, on the Domain.

An immense meeting was held to-day, to protest against the transfer, of the administration of public works to Superintendents. The Mayor was in the chair. There was three hours' discussion, and good speeches made. The feeling swayed considerably. 4t laat, an equally divided centralists' and provincialists' motion wa3 proposed in favor of the General Government carrying on public works. An adjournment waa proposed on the ground of their being insufficient evidence of the reasons which actuated Superintendents, and this was carried, when the meeting broke up. Henry Cuthbertson, jun., a clerk in the Post Office, has been committed for trial on the charge of stealing a letter containing 10s. The letter waa Bent through the office by . the Chief Poatmaster aa a test of the honesty of the subordinates. John Preece has had hia backbone broken by a fall of earth in the Bright Smile mine. He is not expected to recover. Dunedin, Aug. 6. The Albion haa arrived with a troupeof ten Japanese on board. Christchurch, Aug. 6. The Flax Association are exdeavoring to get up an exhibition, and to give prizes from L2O to LSO for the best dressing and scutching machines; the exhibition to be held in December.

A Gas Company is proposed to be established in Lyttelton.
