The schooner Sarah and Mary was brought in* last evening, by the p.s. Dispatch, bhe is from Lytteltou, with a cargo of produce, and is consigned to Messrs Nancarrow, Henderson and Co, who will dispose of the cargo by auction on the wharf to-day. The s.s. Waipara ran up from Hokitika yesterday with the Greymouth portion of the cargo brought by tbe s.s Tararua from Mel- ' bourne. She leaves to-day for Hokitika. The brigantine Sarah and Mary was towed out yesterday afternoon bound fur Melbourne. She takes a large return cargo, consisting of coal, hides, skins, &c, and a , Dumber of passengers. .. _ The b.B. Tararua, which arrived at Hokitika on Thursday, after a rapid passage of four days twenty hours, i cached the Greymonth roadstead at tide-time yesterday, and .was. tendered by the Dispatch. Captain Pearce reports leaving the Sandridge Pier at 2.30 p.m. on the 6th instant, cleared the Heads at 5.15 a.m., the Sister Islands at 9.30 a in. the following day: experienced a remarkably fine passage, smooth sea, and light winds; made the land at daylight, and Hokitika at noon on the 11th The s.s. Tbe war Bteamcr Dido has arrived at Sydney from the Cape. She called at St. v Paul's Island outwards, bnt was unable to - take in the stores of the Megwra wreck owing to bad weather. The New South Wales Marine Board has suspended the certificate of Captain Curphey for six months, for negligence in the. loss of the Clarence. The Hero, from Auckland, arrived at Newcastle en the evening of the sth inst., having encountered heavy weather. The City of Melbourne put into Nelson's Bay, short of coals, and a steam-tug has been sent to her with a cargo. The report published in the Otafio Daily T'me* relating to cracks is the Nevada's - shaft is not easily understood. We believe, says the Dunedin Star, the facts are that these cracks were inspected at Auckland by the Government marine engineer; and the Government was put in possession by that gentleman 6f all information relating to them —their length, position, &c. The Government, by telegram, put certain questions to Mr Nancarrow, the marine engineer here, to answer, and requested him, if he would prefer to sharo the responsibility of answering them, to get tho opinion of other practical engineers, which be did ; and tho so-called report is simply answers to such questions— of course easily understood 1-y those who inquired, but rather vague, and, we think, tending to do harm by creating unfounded snap.inons of danger, to those who were not behind the scenes. In April last a steam pipe burst on board the illyrian screw steamer, lying in tho ' -Mersey. The chief engineer, named Christoprer M'Connell, and a winch man, named James Jack, -were instantaneously killed by the explosion. Their bodies were frightfully ■ scalded. The third engineer was slightly scalded. The Illyrian had returned after a voyage to Alexandria. It belongs to Messrs J. Bibby asd Sons' (livertwol) Mediterranean fleet. At the inquest, after a long scientilic inquiry, tho jury found thatthn canse of the accident was the bursting of a stjam pipe communicating with the boiler at a part which had been faulty since the time of its being fixed, and that tho pipe itself was nt sufficiently strong to bear the nsnal workiiv pressure. They found, also, that the bursting of the pipe was accelerated by tho expansion pipe not being in a condition to work properly, and they appendod n reconnr.enda- ; on that steam pipes should be tested every ; ■ six months by hydraulic pressure.
