Don Carlos, two days afterwards entering Navarre, was completely defeated at Oroquieta by General Moziones. The Prince escaped. Five hundred prisoners were taken. Several thousands afterwards surrendered. Vesuvius was in a state of eruption from 24th April to 2nd May. Rivers of lava poured down the mountain. Forty thousand people left their homes ; about 100 perished. Several villages were destroyed, and the whole district desolated. The King was present, stimulating the authorities to render assistance. The priests appealed to the superstitious fears of the people, and said this was a judgment on the nation for its conduct towards the Pope. Bismarck has retired to his estate troubled with persistent sleeplessness. It is rumored that the recent visit of Queen Victoria to the Continent was for the pnrpose of arranging a marriage between the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Mary, daughter of Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia. Sebastopol is rapidly rising from its ruins. A powerfr.l Black Sea fleet is in course of construction.
