The hidependent of .to-day publishes a digest of despatches received from the Agent-General, stating that there is an improvement, in the feeling regarding New Zealand as a field for immigration, and that the work of procuring immi-; grants was proceeding satisfactorily, though the superior facilities offered by the American Agent were a great obstacle. The ship Halcione sailed on April 26, with 240 adults, including 50 laborers for the Messrs. Brogden, and 50 Scandinavians. The Celestial Queen sailed April 20, with 92 immigrants, and the Auckland on the 18th May, for Lyttelton, with 300 Germans. The ship Hodvig was to leave Christiana with 325 Scandinavians, being the first instalment of 1200 coming, j The Celestial Queen, Schiehallion, and j Halcione also bring 600 tans railway iron for Messrs Brogden, including turntables and warehouse cranes for the Dunedin and Clntha railway. Dr "Featherston, in reply to a telegram as to the smallpox on board the ship England, says the passengers were twice inspected previous to departure, and. that each Scandinavian immigrant presented a certificate of vaccination, and that every precaution was adopted. . The stock was insured in the New Zealand Office for L 2500, in the Liverpool and Globe for L2OOO, in the Northern for Ll5OO, and in the "Victorian for LlOOO. The origin of the fire i 3 unknown.
