INANGAHUA ITEMS.
[herald, june B.] A distressing case of death by drown Bgtook place in the Inan^ahua River yesterday, near to the Landing, the deseased being a young man named Bins. X appears that he was bringing ; hones >ver from, Blenheim, and one having cast ;wo shoes and walking lame, he proceeded ;<> cross the river at Malcolm Stevenson's n order to get the animal shod. AccorSng to Stevensor's account, who witnessed the accident, Birss got too low in the ford, rod the animal being footsore, (.tumbled md rolled over, the -current carrying iway the deceased. Birss managed to jxtricate himself from ti&'pluaging horse, md struck ' out for the bank, but thecurrent was 'too rapid and he was carried down.. The ferryboat was got round, but not in sufficient time to save jiie: poor fellow. Deceased has a brother in the district working, we understand, in a claim on Adam Smith's line. , Stevenson reported the accident in Reefton, and Constable Jefferi.es proceeded to the Landing this morning to institute a search for the body. • At a meeting of the shareholders in Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, amalgamated claims, on Anderson's line of reef, south, and, adjoining the Anderson's Creek Company, Registered, it was arranged to register the company, under the provision^ of the Mining Company's Limited Liability Act, with a nominal capital of L 21,000, in twelve thousand shares of L 35 each ; LI 2, 000 being paid up as representing the value of the claim, and work done by the proprietors. This is certainly a step in the right direction to bring the claim into the notice it merits. They have at present from four to five hundred tons of stone to grass, that will compare favorably with any in the district. Negotiations have been going on between themselves and the Anderson's/Cceek Crushing Company, for the latter to crush 600 tons. Should they come to terms the value of their property would be considerably enhanced, as returns might be expected, at an early date. :■,. '-■■■'■'M--' The time for closing tenders for the construction of a Court House at Reefton has been extended to Saturday, the 15th instant. Tenders must be sent in by that date to the Engineer's office, Westport. £ The condition of Broadway: is positively shocking. The metal by the constant traffic has been completely; cut up, and from one end of the street to, the other foot passengers have to flounder through a perfect sea of mud. The presence of- Mr Dobson, Provincial Engineer, is urgently requisite. .; ; ,;••....,.■ All the right, title, and interest, of William Courtney in the Reefton and Murray Creek tramway was sold . ajb auction by. Jp. Tsaacs and Co. under distress warrant yesterday. The property realised LllO, the purchasers being Clough and party, at whose instance the warrant was issued. • :.',:/,: •••v;.5 1
