The Independent to-day, on the authority of Mr Yogel, denies that the latter is interested in the Navigator's group. ■ The Independent states that the preliminaries regarding the railway contracts only require to be put into legal form for signature. Tho contract for the Picton and Blenheim railway is signed, the price being ten thousand over the estimate. The tender of Mr Brogden for the Invercargill and Mataura line has been received, but being considerably over the estimate is referred for further consideration between the Chief Engineer and the tenderers. The difference is now inconsiderable, and the contract will probably be signed in a day. The Clutha line 13 to be submitted to Mr Brogden in a few days. Mr Brogden is to be invited in a few days to tender for the construction of a portion of the Wellington and Wairarapa line as far as Petoni, and thence to Upper Hutt, will be placed in Mr Brogden's hands at the same time. The General Government has engaged Mr Higginson to examine the direct route over the Himufcaka, assisted by Mr Rochfort. , Greville's manager has declined the management of Mr Vogel's proposed new press telegraphic agency on the ground that it is proposed to exclude certain journals, especially those published in the evening. It is believed the agency will be offered toMrGillon. ; Nelson, June 7. The Committee of inquiry ; into Mr O'Conor's conduct in purchasing sections which the Westport Committee recommended that the sections should be withheld from sale until the question of distributing them among the inhabitants was settled, has not yet been reported. The Committee is sitting daily, for the purpose of giving O'Conor every latitude in making defence. The result is expected to-day. . Chrtstchurch, June 7. Wheat easier at 4s 6d to 4s 9d ; flour, Ll4 ; oata, a shade firmer, and an advance is anticipated j barley; in request, at 5s to 5s 3d ; provisions unaltered. ; Auckland, June 7. Canterbury wheat, 5s 6d to 5s 9d; flour, Ll4 to Ll5. Mr M'Lean has informed a depxitation that the Government intend to organise the militia in the Waikato on a new system. The Board of Education has again discussed the Education Bill, and resolved that education should be secular only, but after school hours any religious denomination might communicate religious instruction in the school-room with the consent of the committee. A meeting to increase the capital of the Freight Company to L 15,000 has been held, in order to allow others to come in. All the shares are taken up. Resolutions were^passed supporting the company.
