WARDEN'S COURT, AH AURA.
Friday, May 1(5. (Before Mr Warden Whitefoord.) Graham, Marshall, .and party, applied for a gold-mining 'lease of 9a. 2r. 36p. for alluvial ground on the supposed course of. the Half-Ounce Lead, below the Mabille Company's workings. They proposed to erect pumping machinery to cost L4OO, to extend an already constructed head-race, and to mark 1100 ft. of a tail-race through deep cutting. It was intended to put six men on the lease during the first six months, and afterwards bwelve men. The extension of tha head-race would be entirely of fluming. The claim could not be worked in the ordinal/ manner. There were five men now at work on the ground applied for. On these facts being Bworn to, and the Government surveyor's report being read, the Warden said the Superintendent would be recommended to grant the lease. James Anderson and party applied for a gold-mining lease of 16a. 2r. 24p. for quartz at the right-hand branch Big River,; in the Little Grey district.' James Anderson, on being sworn, said he had been prospecting the place for some time. He found auriferous quartz mixed with slate and sandstone in the locality, but not within the boundaries of the lease. Three reefs or bodies of stone were discovered, but they were barren,. They were now prospecting a fourth, but .there was difficulty in doing so,in consequence of an immense granite boulder which was lying on the reef or leader. They proposed to take a tunnel in, which the Government Surveyor said in his report would be several hundred feet in length, and it was intended to work the machinery, should any be erected, by means of water power v The locality was . twelve miles south of Murray Creek, and in a direct line with the prospected reefs there. There were twenty shareholders in the ' party. The Warden said he would recommend the grant ; in the meantime the company would have to put three men to work on the ground within one month, and six men after that time. As an encouragement to the party, and to open up, the particular district in which they weW prospecting, in case the Superintendent thought fit to refuse the lease, .the party, if they struck payable quartz, would be protected in the possession of a prospecting area of 1200 ft along the supposed course of the reef, provided they were prepared to properly represent that quantity of ground. The party also applied for a water-right at the same place. Granted. John Turner and party applied for a double area of old ground on the Wellington Terrace, Napoleon district. The applicant said he had been working about the locality for nearly three years. He had to build a large dam, and construct head and tail-races, and as an inducement he wanted an extra area of ground. The application was opposed by John Genezzino and several others, on the ground that the grant, would be a monopoly and an interference with general rights. The notice of objection was signed by parties residing on the Mosquito Lead arid at places away from the proposed grant. The Warden considered the objections were not bona fide, and granted tne application. Samuel Hafford and party applied for an area of 134 ft x 268 ft on the Mutton Town Terrace, Half-Ounce. There being no objection, the application was granted. The following applications for special sites and frontage tunnelling claims were disposed of. Thomas Cautrell, special site for washing purposes, atthe Blackwater. Daniel Campbell, a similar application. Ami Voisin, 120 ft x 1000 ft, Teviot. Pierre Tabay, 146 ft x 1000 ft, Fraser's. Terrace. Peter M'Mahon and three others, 170 ft x 1000 ft, Fraser's Terrace — Protection granted for one man's share for three months in M'Mahon's claim.,, James M'Brierty and two others, 1000 ft' x IOOOf t, Teviot. On the application of William Melody, an order was made directing O'Hara and party on the Half- Ounce Lead to continue working their pumping machinery to avoid swamping the claims immediately below them, pending an equitable arrangement with reference to the purchase of the plant. The Court was adjourned to the 10th May. . •■:■■■■■ s ;
