BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual meeting: of the Borough Council was held at the Town Hall last night. Present — Councillors Smith (in the chair), Macgregor, Purcell, Woolcock. Moore, and Kennedy. Referred to the Public Works Committee. : ; From the Clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court, enclosing 15s — portion of municipal fines. Received. From the District Engineer, Hokitika, asking for certain returns ordered to be furnished. j From ratepayers in Herbert . street, drawing attention to a nuisance. Referred to the Public Works Committee. An account from Orr and Co., for L 4 10s, was received and referred to the Public Works Committee. : An account for the contract in Hospital street, amounting to L3OB, was similarly dealt with. Tenders, :wer.e. received for works in Chapel street, and the tender of H. Bell and party, for L 64, was accepted, subject to the guarantee' of proportionate payment by the inhabitants being lodged with the Town Clerk. Several tenders for the. \ formation of Boundary street were received. Councillor Kennedy moved that no tender should be accepted, but that the Public Works Committee should be empowered to expend the sum of, sayL7s. Councillor M'Gkegob seconded this motion, which was. carried. ; Tenders were received for making Alexander and Puketahi streets. ■ On the motion of Councillor Kennedy, seconded by Councillor Woolcock, it was resolved that none should be accepted, but that the Public Works Committee should be authorised to have the work done at a price not exceeding L 8 per chain. Some small accounrt 'sent in were referred to the Finance Committee. The Town Clerk reported that a small, office was necessary on the wharf. He had had the use of the Customs shed, but there seemed a wish on the part of the Customs authorities for the Council to provide their own office. i 1 After some discussion, it was resolved to postpone the matter. This was all the business, and the Council then adjourned for a fortnight.
