NELSON RACES. Nelson, May 3. The Nelson races commenced to-day. The weather was favorable, and there was a large attendance. : Maiden Plate. — Awatea 1, Squally 2, Fiddes 3, Nightingale 4, Diomedia a bad fifth. It was a good race. Time, 2min. 25sec. for a mile and three-quarters. Turf Club Handicap. — Mile and threequarters: Yatterina 1, Peeress 2, Flying Jib 3. A capital race between Yatterina and Peeress. The latter was beaten by half a head, .after a splendid run all round. Time, 3min. 33sec. Steeple Chase.- -Three miles: Ronald 1, Siren 2, Eclipse 3 ; Sailor Boy nowhere. A good race. Ladies' Purse. — Mile and a quarter: Slander 1, Black Eagle 2, Mystery 3 ; Black Hawk nowhere. Slander came in hands down, Eagle whipping hard. Time, 2min. 30sec. • The steamer Lyttelton has been despatched to tow in the schooner seen floating, bottom upwards off Farewell Spit, believed to be the Ocean Bird, from Lyttelton to Greymouth. . ' The Independent says that in the new San Francisco mail contract, the contractors undertake to reserve adequate berths and cargo accommodation for New Zealand. TheDacotah will soon be ready, and a fourth steamer will shortly be laid on, as 1 the contract specifies.
