MEETING OF THE PAROA ROAD BOARD.

A meeting of the Paroa Road Board was held on Thursday last, when there were present all the members, including the last elected — Mr J. O'Dowd. It was moved by Mr Barnhill, and seconded by Mr Colton, that the minutes of last meeting, as read, be confirmed. — Carried. Moved by Mr O'Connor, and seconded by Barnhill, that the correspondence be received. — Carried. The correspondence consisted of— lst. Letters from the County Chairman stating that it is not in the power of Road Boards to appoint toll collectors, the County Council being the only body which has any powers to do so, or erect toll houses. 2ni. Letters from the Arahura Road Board stating that the Teremakau fevry | is assessed by them (said Board) at LSOO per annum. 3rd. Letters from the Ross Roard Board containing copy of resolution as follows :— That the Chairman of this Road Board be empowered to instruct the Board's solicitor to demand the name of |the Road Board in Westland charged in the Wtst Coast Times, in a leading, article of the 18th March last, with having appropriated the Board's funds for ; the ÜBe of brandy, and such brandy being represented as kerosene, and, that failing compliance with the foregoing, that proceedings be instituted for slander against the editor. Tenders for applications for collecting the tolls per week on the Marsden and Clifton roads were received from the following — Messrs T. Musgrove, LI 10s ; J. E. Green, LI 5a ; J. Treloar, LI 10s ; Hamilton, Russell and Co., 17s j Anselou, 15s. The Treasurer's report showed a balance to the credit of the Board at the Bank of New South Wales to be LI 2s. Mr Colton moved, and Mr O'Connor seconded, that the consideration of the account of Kerr, Arnott and Co. be deferred till next meeting.— Carried. Moved by Mr O'Connor, and seconded by Mr Barnhill, that the following accounts be parsed for payment — J. E. Green, Ll4; H. H.'Wolters, L 3; petty cash, LI 2s ; Evening Star, LI ; J. Ryan, 12s. Moved by Dowling, and seconded by Mr Colton, that tenders stand over until the Board receives a final answer from the County Chairman, which, after a warm discussion, was carried. ":'■'.'■ Moved by Mr O'Connor, and seconded by Mr Dowling, that this Board regrets the action taken by the Totara Road Board, and thinks the best mode of denying the imputation is to treat scurrilous articles with silent contempt. An amendment was moved by Mr Coixon and seconded by Barnhill, that the Secretary be instructed to write to the Chairman of the Totara Road Board informing him that this Board will concur with any action taken by the several Road Boards in reference to scurrilous articles which appeared in the West Coast Times of 38th March last. A division being called for, there were for the amendment, Messrs Colton, Barnhill, O'Dowd, and Butler; against it, Messrs O'Connor and Dowling. Moved by Mr O'Connor and seconded by Mr Bvtler, that the consideration of this Board's claim to rating ferry; on Teremakau, and consideration of boun-dary-line, as denned by schedule of County of Westland] Act, do stand over for further consideration to next ordinary meeting. of the Board.— Carried. Moved by Mr Barnhill, and seconded by Mr Colton, that the Secretary be instructed to write to the County Chairman requesting him to inform this Board its amount of the subsidy to Road Boards under the "Payment to Provinces Act, 1870."—Carried. Moved by Mr Dowling, that the Rate Collector be requested to make inquiries through or in the various districts as to the particular requirements of the said districts and report the same. Seconded by Mr Butler. The Rate Collector (MrH. B. Wolters)^ was asked by Mr Butler as to. his willingness to supply the required information, and said if he would be in any way inconvenienced thereby, he would get some remuneration for it. -•■-• It was proposed as an amendment by Mr Butler— That the members of this Board do make it their business to find out the places in the Road District in which it is most necessary that tracks should be made, bridges, &c, formed, and that fuither steps be taken at the next ordinary meeting of this Board to carry into execution the most beneficial measures for tho same. Seconded by Mr O'Connor, and carried. The Board then adjourned.
