MR.VOGEL AT CASTLEMAINE.
A complimentary dinner to the Vicj torian Ministry ■was given at the volunteer orderly-room, Castlemaine, by the public bodies and others of the Castleriiaine dis trict. The Hen Mr Vbgel was present. ai a guest, an 4 the toast of his health wai proposed by Mr Vale. ' : :.. -i' Mr Yogel, who was received witl cheers, said he was quite unprepared: ffu this honor, and could only .thank ;th( Castlemaine /fiedple for their hospitality He took this opportunity of acknow lodging the great consideration he had fe ceived from, the Government of yiot^rh during his present visit, and ou behalHoi New Zealand he thanked Mr Dirffy&hd the Viotorian representatives at the Ate
intercolonial conferenco for the consider^ tion they had also shown to that colony, whicli was not then represented. Since his arrival here, indeed, he had been' made to feel that everything had been done on his behalf short of concessions which! ririghj: &c Me&n&l u^&oraßleT^ tnaVufe agreement which hadoeen come to between the Governments of Victoria and Now Zealand would meet with the approbation of both communities, and if for no other reason because friendly relations between the two colonies were thereby guaranteed. His own experience^ could furnish a reason why such friendly relations should exist, for he who had been a Victorian had found a happy home in New Zealand, and there were those the British Empire occupied by Victoria, but it must be remembered that that exaltation should be attended with the performance of the duties belonging theretp} jai^A that j Vdctoriar^pul^.by /,i^ i example aid the other Colonies in their aspirations in the way of upward progress. (Applause.) New Zealand had adopted an extensive jrailway system, Jbut. it had_ T3&er> fegafcled'Sas afrj&wjfral^pflH-<O. &j&b\j policy that with the formation of railways there should be iutroduced to the soil a class of immigrants of the right sort, whose presence could not fail to advance, colonial interests. Without that, the" formation of large public works would only paralyse the best interests of the f country. In this way? he; Jwjifttgd f #uft, nhi mafferial prosperity of| "New Zealand coulcf"not fail' to" be**developed. (Cheers.)
