RELICS OF LEICHHARDT.
Those 'interested in the fate of the dis^ tinguishedexplorer will remember that a prispner of the Crown named Hume, undergoing a ten years' sentence in ' Parramatta for bushrariging, deolared in' the most positive njanuer that he had hidden some saddlebags containing papers belonging to the Leichhardt expedition, far away in the interior bf the Australian con-, tinentj and #iat if the {Government gave] him; his ■liberty, (he (Hume) would go and bring these relics in. .The Governmerit not only gave him liialibertyi ibut allowed him Ll2fbran outfit, and also arranged with the South Australian , Government, thai he should have a passage from ft^at< port in the. steamer Omeo to the Northern Territory, whither that vessel proceeded. withMrTodd and his telegraphic party' of men and horses. As might .naturally be supposed, considerable preiudice was felt against Hume, owing, to hia antecedents, and the majority scon.tefl the story, he told as a pure invention, concocted to effect hi? release from penal servitude. He, was received on boardthe Onjeo, when coaling at Newcastle, with undisguised reluctance, and his trip up in her bids fair to be, socially speaking, of the most; dismal character. His conduct whilst onboard was not piily in every way exemplary, but he became a general favorite in the ship. Captain .Colder, further reports that on arrival at the Northen Territory, Hume ;was quite aw fait witl the native' tongue, understanding' anc being understood apparently with ease. Hume has established the impression that the representations he has made to, -the Government are correct, and that lid will carry out that which he has under} taken. . . . . ..... "
