SPORTING NOpS,
(by peeping Toaf.) Iv my last I promised to give yo\i"r readers the probable winners 7 of the different events to be run for to-day. The first event is the Trial Stakes, with three entries— Flying. Jib, XXX, and Peeress. Should Peeress start for this race, it ought to ly hers,. as she is unequalled by any horse in New. Zealand, weight for age, still I doubt her starting for it against so good a horse as Th,e Jib, as it would materially affect her: chances for I the Handicap, in which she will have to give heaps of weight to fresh horses. Leaving the Daughter of the "Peer put .of the question, 1 place Flying Jib first at any pace. Then we have the Lottery Plate. In this event, so far as I know, Flying Jib, Economy, and XXX will have to carry seven pounds penalty, and I fancy will put the latter's chance completely out of the race, and should the Trial Stakes fall to the lot of The Gify I scarcely think he will care to run another mile and a quarter carrying seven pounds extra. The race will therefore ; lie between Economy, Roland; Task; and Black Bess; Of the two latter the public are unaware of their capabilities ; of their performances neither does Task take my fancy as a race-horse. - i Should, therefore, Economy not, be aiming at higher game, doubtless the race will bp his.. My opinion on the Handicap your readers have already had, therefore I will not trouble you with any further remarks. Next we have the Hurdle Race, with three entries, weight for age-~Task, Sailor Boy, and Roland. Task is, to my mind, only a make-up for the race, showing neither condition or quality to give him, with such competitors, a chance, and, in my opinion, the race ought to be a gift, to Roland, whose performances of late in Nelson stamps him no mean hurdle racer, which, together, with the hands he his in, his condition and capabilities' warrant me. in placing him first past the Judge's box. .W ; ... The last of this day is theDistrict.Plate. For this we have three entries— Task, XXX, and Economy. This, I believe, will prove the best race of the day, and, I believe, will be entirely between the daughter of Golden Grape and Dromedes' son, as the latter is engaged in the byerace. Should he find his chance of it lost, will, no doubt, be saved for this event, and the final struggle between the pair ought to. be worth seeing, as they meet on nearly equal terms and the distance suiting each, and in the event of each horse being fairly and well ridden, I am inclined to place Economy first, 3ppL sepqnd, and Task anywhere.. I purpose aiter the handicaps are published to give you to-morrow ttie probable winners of the. next day's events.
