GAS.
[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir—^l, in common with a number of business men in town, have cause' to complain at the manner in which gas is supplied to consumers. Jt^yould appear that the demand far exceeded the supply obtainableValthough it was stated'at the last general meeting of the Company, in order to meet the wants of an increasing community, that the works were much more extensive than originally contemplated.? In such a short period, the number of consumers cannot have so much increased aa to require larger works, therefore I am led to infer there must be some neglect. If the Company is unable to meet the present demand, why do they continue to lay service pipes, and thus give cause of annoyance and inconvenience to all ? It is extremely vexatious to be left in darkness while in the act of serving customers, and more injurious than business men will allow to continue. On two or three occasions, the gas has gone out, and the hunting up of old lamps, candles, <fee, has had to be resorted to. After two or three instances of this kind, I was inclined to think that the directors of the
Company would have taken steps to pre* vent a repetition ; but, not doing so, I have been induced to call their attention publicly to the injury consumers suffer. Besides, such a course of procedure will not induce intending consumers to make application for services to be laid on while the mode of supply is ao defectiveit^thus causing a loss to. the shareholder^ If they cannot supply a sufficient quantity of gas with their present works, Jtet_ it be notified and applications for aervMsar**' refused. If, on the other hand, they have the plant and material to manufacture a sufficient quantity, then the con« sutners and shareholders have a right to demand why it is not forthcoming.
