THE THAMES.
The reports from the Caledonian mine are not very encouraging, the crushing at the batteries looking very poor indeed. The great bulk of the stuff that is being reduced is from the No. 1 stope, which has broke through into the Tookey, and from here the quartz is very inferior. In No. 2 stope, north of No. 3 winze, the the quality remains about the same. In the drive to the north, bottom level, the" manager reports that the lode is very little moro than a seam of quartz, but a further contract for 60ft has been let, and this will further develop the lode going towards the Otago. . From the Tookey Company's claim the report is, that the few tons of stone crushed at the Prince Alfred battery did not yield very well, giving a return at the rate of about 6dwt to the ton. Although the main reef has not proved payable where worked on, the upper portion of the mine has done so to a large extent, and this is proved by the number of tribute parties who have willingly; taken up the ground as it was offered. There are at present eight different parties working the upper levels, and, as can be seen by the returns sent in from time to time, they have so far proved remunerative to the men working them, and also to the company. •
