SUBSIDIES TO HOSPITALS.
The following is the report of the Select Committee in respect to subsidising hospitals in the County, which was laid on the Council table on-Tuesday night :—. Yota Committee, aftejj having carefully inquired into the present management of the hospitals in the County, beg to submit the following recommendations to the Council. Ist. That until such time as the Hokitika Hospital is removed to. a more convenient site, by which a more economical management can be effected, the present subsidy of two-thirds of the actual expenditure is to be continued. 2nd: That the salary of the SnrgeonSuperintendent of the Hokitika Hospital be paid by that institution, and charged under general expenditure. 3rd. That all the Hospital Committees take charge of and maintain all patients of both sexes in their respective districts, and in case a committee should Bend a female patient to another hospital, the said committee is. bound to defray all expenses of maintenance of such patient. 4th. That the County Treasurer be appointed auditor for the hospitals in the County, and all hospital accounts to be audited at the end of each quarter. In order that greater savings in the management of the Hokitika. Hospital may be effected, your Committee recommend that the contemplated changes be carried out without delay ; and also that some steps be taken to reduce, if possible, the enormous cost of the maintenance of patients in the Totara District Hospital.
