THE ARNOLD ROAD.

' ' "■'■■ ' ♦ y' : (TO THE EDITOR.) Sir— Will you allow me to inform your readers, in reply to certain remarks quoted in your paper this morning, .made by Mr Barffin the County Council' to 'the effect that the County had sustained a loss through my having laid out the road to the Coal Mines , so as to cross the line of railway a great number of titnes^that I laid out that road in exact' accordance with the instructions I, received from Mr Frew, the County Engineer. Moreover, at the time I did the workj no railway had been laid out, and no instructions had, as far as I am aware, been given to lay it out, so that it was impossible to be sure of avoiding its future course, no matter where I had run the road line; but, be that: as it may, before I commenced operations I specially asked Mr Frey "whether I was to '^jf® th Q railway line into account ?i laying off tjfie ppafl near the Coal Mines , and- was ; distinctly instructed by him only to consider which was the best Hue. of road, and to lay it out without any regard id the railway at. all. I received a specification from >Mr - Frew* giving full defca'js of the, manner in which the work was to be donejand in it there is no mention of the railway line ; and Mr Frew walked over ; the groiind with me before I commenced t?>6 purvey, and pointed out the general cour.se tup road should take, and that course J adr hered to. As a further proof that I acted strictly in r.scordance with the instruotions I received, Mr Frew went over the line after Ihad laid fit' but, was-perfectly satisfied with it, with the exception of a small deviation of ■ aboiit a chain at one point, which had no reference to the railway, and certified to the voucher for payment without demur. I therefore nmintain that lain ii6i in any way to blame in the matter, and in conclusion % wovijd suggest that County Coimciilor3 should, before making a charge, against anyone, make full; inquiries to ascertain its correctness. ■ . .;• \ I am, &c, ' W.
