SHIPPING ITEMS BY THE MAIL.
Tho ship Nonpariel, which left Bombay for New York on 12th July, foundered at sea. All but three of the crew were drowned. Tho ship Defiance, 1001 tons, Captain Angels, from Bombay to Liverpool, with a cargo of 5700 bales of cotton, has been wrecked near the Cape of Good Hope. All hands were saved. The Bteamer City of Brooklyn ran into and sank the steamer Idea in the Mersey on the 14th November. Ono officer of the latter was drowned. Tho 8.8, Holland arrived at Calcutta on the 22nd November, having made tbe passage from Liverpool in 33 days, including two days and five hours in passing through the Suez Canal. The steamer City of New fiondon, whilst proceeding from New York to Norwich (America) was destroyed by fire on the 21st November. Three passengers, the officers, and deck hands lost their lives. The steamer was valued at 175,000 dollars. A collision occurred on the night of the 26th November, off the Irish coast, betweeu the ships Marmion and Osceola. fhe latter sank very soon afterwards. Several of the crew escaped by jumping aboard the Marmion, but nine men are missing. It is hoped that they saved themselves in one of the boats. There was a severe gale on the British coast on the 15th November, Tho following are some of the casualties reported :• -The Egeria, driven on the Irish coast, fivo lives lost ; tho barque Mary Baker and ship Arrow, sunk in the River Mersey, with all hands on board; the barque Charles, of Aberdeen, wrecked, six lives lost. A New York telegram, dated Bth December, states :— "Twenty-five lives were lost on the Nova Scotian coast, in the gale last week— eleven by the wreck of tho packet schooner in tbe Avon River, nine by the loss of the Bennudan brigantine Jabez, at the Strait of Causo, and five by tint of the schooner Catherine, in Yarmouth Sound." A Boston telegram, datel 15th November, states :— '• The loss of the Gloucester fishing fleet during the present season is greater than any daring any previous year ; and the number of lives sacrificed exceeds "that of any other year except 1862. Twenty-two vessels have been wrecked, sunk, or abandoneddvalue at 163,060 dollars, on which was 89,316d01. insurance, nearly all, however, on the mutual plan ; 136 fishermen lost their ' Hvea, 45 of whom left widows, and upwards I of 90 children are rendered fatherless/ A New York telegram of the 13th Novem I her, states :- "The steamship Franklin, cf Hie New Baltic Lloyd's Line, arrived on > l atarday night, with a number of cases of
