MR LAHMAN'S QUESTIONS TO MR HARRISON.
(to the editor.) r
Sir— ln my reply to one of Mr Lahman's questions, put to me by proxy at the late meeting, I aaid that I had no remembrance of Mr Lahman having invited my co-operation with regard to inducing the General Government to construct a road from Greymouth up the Grey Valley. Since the meeting, I have found a' telegram which I received fijom Mr Lahman after he Had left Wellington, a co}>y of which I think it due to Mr Lahman should be published. -It is! as .follows : — 1
" Hokitika, Nov. 7, 1871. " I hope you will unite with Mr White in getting, a sum voted for Westland jjut. of the Railway Loan for the construction of roads. One of them, from Greymouth to Arnold, independent of the railway^ would be of great utility, the more' so when continued by the Nelson Government. The making of the contemplated main trunk line from Ross to Greymouth will entirely depend upon Mr Gisborne amending the Bill so as to spend the whole of Westland's share for four years at once. Remember, the Grey District will require the lion's share of this." ■ Prior to the receipt of Mr Lahman's telegram the desired provision for making Westland's share -for roads : at once available had been inserted in the Bill, on the independent recotariiendation of the Westland members.
