SOUTH BEACH.

[from our own "correspondent.] November 8. The Great Extended Company have worked a large extent of ground to the south of the creek near the town boundary, and have yet some considerable work before their old lease is completely finished. They have however taken up another lease of five acres to the south of the Ballarat Creek, and it is to be hoped their new ground will prove as remunerative as their former claim did. Barker and Co., who are working to the south of the Great Extended Co.'s new- ground, have made a great hole in their lease. As they work southwards, the lead narrows very much. The next sluicing claim is Colson and Co.'s, who have also made a great inroad on their claim. All these parties are now working on what is known as Watson's Lead, reworking the old ground, which as a rule pays very well. Dowling and Co. are still ground sluicing on the Terrace near Paroa, with their usual results. The Co-operative Wheel Co. continue constantly employed, in fact it would have to be a very long spell of dry weather before they would be short of water, as they get the first supply from the Leviathan Water Race Co. The magnificent working gear of the Cooperative Co. has been found to be very effective, and it is very interesting to see the trucks run up a steep incline, empty themselves, and run down again to be refilled. Clarke and Co., late Marshall and Co., are now working near Moutray's old store. They seem to be making great headway with their work. The "Little Wonder" is the next claim, and as it lies between Clarke's wheel and the Maiden City it must be paying well. The Maiden City has long been considered as one of the best, and as they have depended entirely on manual labor it is surprising to see the work they have done. These waterwheel companies are all adjoining, and with the exception of one or two others may be said to be the most successful on the beach. Flynn and Co.'s wheel may also be ranked amongst these, as well as one near the Half-way Hotel, which has been worked from the commencement. On the Stony Lead, the Rising Sun is in full working order, and is one of the best ever opened. The Age of Progress, adjoining, has long proved itself to be second to none. The same may be aaid of the Royal Standard, while the North Star's claim is fully appreciated by the fortunate shareholders. In fact these claims will bear favorable comparison with those first opened on the old Lead, and for some months to come they will prove one of the principal mainstays of the beach. The Long Drive are still persevering with the tunnel, and when that is on to the lead, another good claim is expected to be added to these. Burns and Co., formerly Stansell and Co., are said to have struck payable gold at the same depth as the North Star, below the bottom usually worked on. Some parties are also prospecting near the Homeward Bound, for the second bottom, and if they succeed it is not unlikely that a considerable area of ground that has either been worked or left as " duffer," will again be taken up. •
