CHAMPION ATHLETIC SPORTS AT HOKITIKA.

[west coast times.] Second Day—Monday. The first race was the commencement of a handicap to be run in heats of 200 yards, 440 yards, and 880 yards respectively. The winners to count by points, in this wise :— First place, five; second place, three ; and third place, two. Westland DistanceHandicap— First prize, £15 ; 2nd, £6 j 3rd, £4. Fiest Event— 2oo Yards. Hewitt, scratch 1 Harris, scratch 2 D. Twohill ... 3 Six ran for this race, comprising Rankin, Hearn, and Pentecost, besides those placed. The race was well contested, and afforded Hewitt another opportunity of evincing his superiority in running. 440 Yards Westland Distance Handicap. Hewitt, scratch ... 1 Harris, scratch ... 2 D. Twohill, 30 yards ... '... 3 This was the second event in the point race. Six ran. The three ; not placed being Bankin, Hearn and P. Twohill. Hewitt had now secured ten points, Harris six, and Dan Twohill four. Three Mile Handicap Walking Match. Pentecost .... 1 Two started for this race, Pentecost and Walsh, the latter receiving thirty yards start. Both the men went off exceedingly well. Walsh kept his start during the first four laps of 440 yards each, and looked, exceedingly confident, as if he really did mean winning, but at the fifth lap he was overtaken and passed, aud he then gave in, leaving Pentecost to finish the three miles by himself. Steeplechase —s4o yards, over two water jumps. P. Twohill, 30 yards ... ... 1 D. Twohill, 40 yards 2 Harris, scratch 3 This was the most amusing event of the day, and excited considerable interest, the water jump being no less than sixteen feet across and of no mean depth. There were only four who ran for it, Bob Howe being the additional man not placed, and he was the only one of the four who really cleared the j ump. Pat Twohill got across, but one foot was in the ditch, and Harris, though he jumped across, fell as he jumped. Dan Twohill made no bones about it at all, but jumped clean into the ditch and scrambled up again. At the second leap over the ditch, all attempts to clear it were abandoned, and each man scrambled through as he best could. 880 Yards Westland District Handicap. P. Twohill, 45 yards 1 Bankin, 45 yard* ... ... 2 D. TwohiU, 45 yards ..... ... 3 This was the poncluding heat for the match. Only five ran, those not placed being Pentecost and Hearn. Hewitt had already secured ten points, and there was no need for him to compete unless Harris, who had made six points, did so. Harris already held second place, unless Dan Twohill gained first place in the last heat. It was therefore arranged that the competition in the last heat should be for third place only, and which was secured by Dan Twohill.
