THE NEW SCHEME OF GOVERNMENT FOR GREY DISTRICT.
CONSTITUTION OF THE BOARD
OF WORKS. [FROM OUR OW.N CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Oct. 6. To-day the Colonial Treasurer made a statement as to the measures which the Government intended to propose to the House and to. press on during the session. The Provincial Government Reform Bill oonsists of the following main features :— Superintendents to sit in Provincial Councils after next general election for Provincial Councils, except in regard to Hawkes Bay, Marlborough, and Taranaki. The members of each Provincial Council to be reduced to the same number, each Province returns to the General Assembly. .xxrii.l. — „— j i.~ i.1. „ CL- na rTT\i a i-l~i-^1 : >a Cinlonidi Treasurer used the following words : — " I am not able to say whether we shall in this Bill deal with the Grey District, or shall deal with it separately. The intention of the Government is to propose that the district shall be added to the Nelson Province; but that some special provision shall be made for establishing Road Boards within the whole of the Gold Fields of that Proviuce, and for dealing with the local revenue to a certain extent." The following is the proposed constitution of the Colonial Board of Works:— The Board is to consist of a President and five members, to be nominated by the Governor the Minister of Public Works, the Chief Engineer, and the Sepond Engineer, who are to be members ex officio. The five nominated are to retire annually, but to be eligible for re-nomination. The Disqualification Act is not to apply to nominated members. The Bill will contain provisions for Sub-Boards in different parts of the Colony, and for the formation of a separate Board to take charge of works upon the Gold Fields.
