Wellington, Oct. 4. Yesterday, the House carried a resolution of thanks to Sir D. Monro, and an address to the Queen that will instruct the Governor to call Sir D. Monro to the Upper House.
A long debate took place last night on the Education Bill. The clause was carried that no minister of religion can be an inspector of schools. A strong opinion was expressed that the Government should withdraw the Bill for this session.
The resolutions for new Stamp Duties, and duties on cereals and timber came on last night,. when Mr Stafford refused to discuss the financial policy until the whole the Financial Bills had been brought down, and the House was informed what course was going to be taken with regard co the Brogden contracts.
A long and acrimonious discussion en- ' sued, which lasted until after one o'clock this morning, and progress was reported, without any vote being taken.
It is rumored that to obviate the necessity for extra taxation that the vote for Volunteers will be abolished, or reduced by one-half.
As the estimates for the Ross and Hokitika road are very large, it is now being considered whether, instead of a road, to make a light railway.
The Minister of Public Works, on the representation of the member for Grey Valley, consents to recommend the House to appropriate part of the Middle Island Railway Fund to the construction of the main road up the Grey Valley over the, Saddle into Inangahua Valley.
Mr Harrison's resolutions come on tomorrow, and the Government is preparing a Bill on the same subject, but slightly different in its details, which will proba^ bly be accepted .
The hon. John Hall is dangerously ill.
