BOROUGH COUNCIL.
v;,A meeting of the Borough. Counci! was' held. at the Town Hall, Friday evening. There were-'present : Messrs Kennedy (in the chair),* Moore, Nichol, Purcell, Macgresjor, Woolcock, and Dnprc. The minutes- of the last me'eting'h'aving" been read and adopted, A letter was read from 0. Y. O'Connor, stating that Mr J. R. Johnston, Town Surveyor,- Would retnrrrftoni the survey of the main road, on completion of the survey within the next few days. A report as to the state of the protective works was read from the Town Surveyor. He asked that twenty 50ft piles should be obtained, in order to strengthen the works. 'He promised to furnish the Council with a report on the state of the protective works at its next sitting, but in the meantime he thought there was no cause for alarm of any immediate danger. It was resolved that tenders for the supply of the piles be called forthwith. A letter from Messrs Scott and Wilkinson, Insurance Agents, Hokitika, was read, aud the Town Clerk was instructed to effect an insurance on the. Town Hall of L4OO, at 5 per cent. On the application of Mr Glenn, it was agreed to allow the erection of a verandah in front of Mr Brown's shop, Mawhera quay. Mr Kennedy moved — " That a return of all rate of LI and upwards, due .to the Council, be laid on the table, and that immediate .steps be taken by the, Town "Clerk foir'the recovery of the same. Mr Niohoi- seconded the motion^ which was carried. ,...--. The following report was then uead from the Public Works Committee : — - "Your pomniittee have the honor to report that", after receiving Mr Johnston-s estimate for the »york required to b,e done in Hospital street, they instructed the Town Clerk to accept the tender of Martin Kennedy to complete the same, as per modified specifications, and that 76 per cent, be paid on the work passed. "2. That your Committee instructed the Town Clerk to inform Mr 0. Y. O'Connor that the Council required Mr Johnston's services for town works, and instructed Mr Johnston to take the necessary steps for commencing the required' repairs to the wharf and steps. c f 3. Your Committee would recoinniendi that permission be granted to Mr Bradley to cut a drain' in Leonard street, subject to the instructions and approval of the Town Surveyor. "4. Your Committee" would recommend that the officers of the f Greymouth Volunteer Fire Brigade be authorised to expend a sum not exceeding L 5 for iron brackets to work the Tainui street fire-bell upon, for the purpose of ascertaining if ; the bell will give a better alarm before removing same. " ~ " ' ' ' 5. Your Committee would recommend that the specifications -for Alexander street be referred back to Mr Johnston for more detailed information. "6. That the Committee recommend the site adopted by the Couucil in Boundary street for a public pound, and recommend that %q Town Qlerk be appointed ponndkeeper." All the clauses of the report were considered seriatim and adopted. ' A discussion took place as to granting some financial assistance to the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and a notice of motion was given for a vote of LIOO in liquidation of the brigade's present liabilities. \ The following report was reail from the committee appointed to report on the advisability ofaltering the Wards :— " Your Committee having been appointed to report on the advisability of altering the present boundaries of the 1 Wards ot the Borough, recommend that the boiindaries of the Wards be altered as follows : — The west boundary of the East Ward to be Tainui street, instead of Albert street, as heretofore. The east boundary of the, Mii? die Ward to be Tainui street, and the west, bojndary street. The east boundary of the West Ward to be Boundary street, instead of Johnston street, as heretofore. Yourcomn]:ttee have been guided in making the above recommendations by the present inequality, of the rates contributed by the Wards, the East Ward contributing on an assessment of L 10,261 ; the Middle Ward, LBBO2 5 the West Ward 3^0.-' , It was then moved by Mr Njphol, seconded by Mr Woolcock, and carried — " That a memorial be drawn up to.his Excellency the Governor to effect +,he alteration, signed by hi 3 Worship the Mayor and Borough Councillors, and that a tracing of the proposed alteration accompany the memorial. That his Worship the Mayor an i Councillors Moore and Nichol be appointed to carry out the resolution and forward the memorial. A tender was opened from Mr Hazel for forming and metalling 13 chains of Mnrray street for the sum of L 96 17s, and was accepted, subject to the holders of property there depositing two-thirds of the amount with the Town Clerk. By permission of the Council, the Standing Orders were suspended, and Mr J. C. Moore moved— "That, in the opinion of this Council, the adoption of the ol'inciples contained in Mr Harrison's resolutions would be beneficial to the West Coast Gold Fields of the Middle Island ; and that this resolution be telegraphed to Mr Harrison the first opportunity. Mr M'Gregok seconded the motion, which waS;Oarried unanimously, v The Council then adjourned.
