PUBLIC MEETING AT NAPOLEON. A public meethvgwas held at Mr James M'Laughlin's hotel, at' Napoleon, on Tuesday, sth instant, for the purpose of eliciting the opinion of the inhabitants of Napoleon, Mosquito, Orwell Creek, Italian Lead, and Topsy Creek, on the movement with reference to the abolition of the control of the Nelson Provincial Govern^ nient over the Grey Valley Gold Fields. The chair was taken by Mr John Craig, who explained the object for which the meeting was called, and read the resolutions passed at Ahaura, on 29 bh August. The Chairman. also read the, petition to the General Assembly prepared by the committee at Ah^ura, and called upon Mr James Lock to propose the first resolution. Mr Lock proposed—"Thatthis.meeting is of opinion that the -Nelson Provincial Government has, by its incompetency and neglect of the interest*, of this part of the Province, lost the confidence of the inhabitants of this portion of the Grey Valley District, and that the petition to the General Assembly, praying that^ it will, substitute another ! form of government for the gold fields, be adopted." • : ' Mr John Bailey seconded the resolution, which was unanimously" cafrjed. Mr R. Rutledge proposed, and Mr J. Ran kin seconded— " That the following gentlemen be appointed a local committee, to co-operate with the .centraljcommittee at Ahaura :— -Messrs John 0. Craig, James Lock, John Bailey, E. Fan!e, R. H. Bayliss, T. O'Neill, Louis Montagnet, Martin Maloney, Peter-Maguire,' Rujdolph Newmann, John Rankin, and the mpver.'' Carried. ■•-■■■■- . ; Messrs Craig, Lock, Bailey, fßtjnkin, and Rutledge addressed the meeting at some length ; but, owing to the late,' hour at which the meeting separated, we regret we are unable to give more than an outline of the proceedings. j After passing a vote of thanks to the ( Chairman, the meeting was dissolved.
