[from our own correspondent.] " WELLINGTON,:Sept. 6. • Mr Macandrew's resolutions haye been postponed. The education debate was reßunjedlast night by Mr Harrison, who approved, of the principles of the Bill, but objected to Provincial or' County" CstTficlls jhaving anything to^doiwithl the Boards. He ap^ , proved of the provisions for, aiding schools in outside localities, and Catholic or other schools, as provided by the Bill. He pointed out several defects in the compulsory clauses, which he was afraid would not work.' Mr Shephard of Nelson delivered a good speech, and objected to religious instruction of any kind being given by schoolmasters, and supported the Nelson plan of education. Mr Haughton generally supported the Bill, but hoped that full provision would be made for securing the rights of Catholics. He was opposed to the State doing more than to provide elementary education, and said that -higher schools should be left to private enterprise. The Catholics were a powerful majority in the Colony, and would not be satisfied with any measure that did not secure them a fair share of public money, The debate "was "adjourned until this evening. There is no change in the political position, and nothing will be done till the Financial Statement is made. : Mr Williamson has been elected for Auckland City West without opposition. The Government contemplate the commencement of extensive harbor works, at Greymouth.
