COUNTY COUNCIL.

Wednesday, Augtjst 2. Mr Button moved — " That a sufficient sum for the purchase of boring rods four or five hundred feet in length, for the use of the County, be placed upon the estimates." This was of great importance in a gold country. The bottom, he might say, had been reached in no locality. The Government projected expending large sums of money in bringing in water-races, and before they did so it would be advisable to ascertain thevahieof the ground. In the Totara district, between Ross and Mikonui, there was a large tract of land which might be efficiently prospected by boring. He spoke at great length, point- ! i ing out the advantages likely to accrue through having a boring apparatus. — Mr Dungan seconded the motion. — Mr Barff moved an amendment — "That the sum of L2OO be placed on the estimates for the purchase of the necessary plant. — Mr Button accepted the amendment, which was carried. Mr Guinness moved — "That the County Chairman be requested to direct the immediate survey, &c, of the road

from the Omotumotu Creek to the Coal Pits, and from the Stillwater Creek to the Arnold ; and call for tenders for making the same, in accordance with the resolution passed by the Council on the 24th July, 1871."— Mr Hoos seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Barff moved— "That a Select Committee be appointed to consider and report upon the means to be adopted to obtain a weekly sitting of the Warden's and Resident Magistrate's Court at Goldsborough. Such committee to consist of '-■ Messrs Dungan, Hoos, Guinness, and the mover, to report in a week. "--The Chairman would remind the Council that there was a resolution to the same still in force. One matter had been forgotten, and that was that the Warden had stated not only j would a Court House be required, but also another Warden' 3 Clerk." — The motion was carried. Mr Hoos moved—" That the Roads and Tracks Committee's report be adopted."— Mr Barff moved that the Council go into committee, as the report did not give such information as the Council deserved. They should be told by the Chairman of the Committee the exact amount each track would cost. — MrRobinson peconded the motion. — The amendment was lost.— Mr Robinson would move that the report be referred back to the committee for the purpose of having the sums of money to be spent on each work attached. — Mr Barff seconded the amendment. — This amendment was also negatived. — A great deal of discussion ensued on points of order, and ultimately the motion was carried.— On the motion of Mr Guinness, the Council then adjourned.
