COUNTY COUNCIL.
Monday, July 31.
The Chairman asked leave to read a letter that he had received from Mr Hungerford, in connection with the Christchurch road contract, and the sureties he proposed. After some discussion, it was agreed that this be referred to the Tender Committee. On the motion of the Chairman, the Council went into committee on the maintenance of roads. The tenders opened were for the maintenance of the Greenstone, the Arnold, the* Chesterfield, and the Woolhouse roads. The first was the Greenstone road, which was divided into four sections. For Section No. 1, from Stafford to Waimea, two miles and six chains, there were the following tenderers, viz. : — Patrick Dee, Ll5B ; Wm. Kenney, L 16 4; Cassidy and Clarke, whole four sections, L 675 ; Albion and Henderson (No. 1), L 12 0; Cassidy and Clarke (No. 1), Ll3O. Section No. 2, W. Kenney, L 23 0; Patrick Dee, L 224 ; Cassidy and Clarke, L 195. Section No. 3, P. Dee, L 19 3; W. Kenney, L 19 9; John Viner, L 164 ; Cassidy and Clarke, L 14 0; R. W. Brodie, L 157 10s. Section 4, W. Kenney, L 26 3; P. Dee, L 25 4; John Maher, L 19 4; E. J. Price, L 26 0; F. Simpson, L 27 0; Cassidy and Clarke, L 275 ; Peter Helmning, L 215. An additional tender for No. 2 was discovered from Henderson and Albion for L2so.— Mr Robinson moved—" That the lowest tenders of all should be accepted." — Mr Guinness seconded the resolution. — The Chairman moved an amendment that the tender of Cassidy and Clarke for the whole work for L 675 be accepted. He thought that this would prove the best, and the cheapest in the end for the Council to accept. Some discussion took place on the subject, and the result was that the tender of Albion and Henderson was accepted for No. 1 ; that of Cassidy and Clarke for sections No. 2 and 3 ; and that of John Maher for No. 4. A tender was received from Mr James Preston, L 75, for the Chesterfield Track. This was the only tender received and it was accepted. For repairs to the Arnold RoadTenders were received from John Johnson, L 34 5; Peter Vocke, L 24 3; H. Smith, L 245 10s. There were no deposits accompanying any of these tenders, and it was proposed that on this account none should be accepted. Eventually the acceptance of tenders was postponed for a week, in order to give the tenderers an opportunity of making good their deposits, the Chairman to communicate with them in the interval. On the motion of Mr Hoos, all the tenders were re-committed, and that member then moved that the tender of Mr Preston should be rescinded, as another tender had been found considerably lower than that previously accepted. After some discussion the motion was rescinded. The newly discovered tender was then read, and was found to be from Michael Deegan for LSB. This was accepted. The Council then resumed. The Chairman moved that the tenders, as agreed to in committee, be accepted, which was carried. The Council then adjourned till the usual hour the next day. _
