TASMANIA.

The Launceston Times says : — Messrs Smith and Poole purchased during last ■week abont 14r>2 of gold from diggers on alluvial claims at Nine- mile Springs and Hfracom.be. It is a remarkable fact that all the gold at Mangapa, Black Boy, Ninemile Springs, and Back Creek is more or less impregnated with iron ; but the fine gold obtained at Ilfracombe, though the strata there is full of pure iron ore, contains not a particle of iron. The natural inference from this fact is, that the gold found at Ilfracombe must have travelled a long distance from the matrix and become {urified of iron particles in the process. f the llfracnmbe gold could be traced to its source or matrix,, a really valuable gold field would be discovered.
