VICTORIA;

[leader, may 20.] A nugget weighing nearly two hundred tad fifty ounces waa brought in to Inglewood from Berlin on Thursday. It was bought by the Bank of New South Wales. The most important event in mining matters in this district (states the M. A. Mail, 12th May) is the large yield from the Fenton Company — two hundred and eighty ounces being the result of the past fortnight's crushing. The United Kingdom have been crushing but poor stuff during the last fortnight, their yield beinsr only 350z. The tributers of the Central mine are very much retarded in their working for want of hands. Ham and party, on the Talbot Hill, are still hauling water, of which they have a large quantity. They are sanguine, however, when the ground is drained, of soon striking the gutter, which is known to pass through the hill. The St. A maud Mercury, 33th May, remarks:— "From Stuart Mill we hear that the New Isis Cn.'s tribuiers crushed about 120 tons of atone, which yielded 103oz 16dwt of smelted gold for the fortnight ending 6th May. The Representative, 15th May, reports a very decided imnrovement in quartzmining operations throughout the Castlemaine -division. The good finds commenced at the Specimen Gully reef, now working at about 220 ft, from which the last 200 tons crushed yielded 2500z of gold, and the stone now being raised promises even richer returns. The claims both north and. south are taken up. On Capper's reef, south of Specimen Gully, in a claim just purchased by Mr Bibby, 10 tons just crushed has returned 250z of gold." For a fortnight's work two men have got LB6, showing a dividend of 25s a fiftieth share. On Shellback Reef, next adjoining south-west of Capper's, another rich reef has been opened, the trial crushing yielding 2oz to the ton. On Turnbull's Reef, Warren and Company have found richer quartz, and claims adjoining are taken up. At Campbell's Creek, the Nuggetty Company have found a splendid leader in North and Co.'s old claim, at a depth of 200 ft. On a supposed continuation of Blarney Reef, nearly two miles south of the prospectors' claim, Morrison Brothers have crushed 10 tons, obtaining 15oz of gold. In several other places prospects have been obtained, and companies are being formed to work the Post Office, Argun, South Ajax, and other reefs. The many superior openings for mining ventures are attracting capitalists from Saudhurst, Wood's Point, and other places. The Dmwlhj AdmHiser, 16th May, says: — Sporting Flat has attracted more miners thither to try their luck, and yesterday fresh claims were marked off along the eastern side of the flat. A piece a little over 2oz was obtained on Friday last, and 4|dwt were obtained from the bottom of a hole ; yesterday small prospects were ob tamed from the bottom of two other shaftp. A prospector's claim has been registered with the mining registrar for some alluvial ground situate near Goldsborough, the prospect being 2dwt of gold from the bottom of a small shaft, and there is about 7in of washdirfc. The country round about is a likely one for heavy gold, a hit weighing about 3dwt having been picked up on the surface by a splitter in that locality a few weeks since. A correspondent sends us the following :— Mining matters at Inglewood have at last taken a favorable turn, and there seems every probability that the grand old days are about to return.
