Bluff, May 31 1 p.m. Melbourne, May 25. The horrible death of Volunteer Alexander causes a deep sensation. Somersetshire has four cases of small-pox ; the latest occurred on the 18th inst. Numerous deputations have waited on [ the Government against the altered tariff, principally of working people, who allege that it gives less encouragement to local industries. A lengthy debate is taking place on the budget. Mining disturbances and outrages at Ballarat have been quelled. The Governor has recovered from an attack of scaiatica, and was present at the review and levee. The market is fairly sustained. Mr Parkes is expected by the Coorong to-day, the object being an interview with the Government and the Chamber of Commerce on the Californian route question. At the ceremony cf the dedication of the schools of the convent of the Sisters of Mercy there was a large gathering of Catholics, clergy and laity. Adelaide, May 24. Nimblefoot beat Lapdog by four lengths ; time 2 minutes 51 seconds. For the Town Plate Lapdog was overweighted. The Government at the interview with Mr Parke3 urged upon him the necessity of obtaining from Sydney concessions as regards the Suez route before any decision is come to. The Wonga Wonga reports passing a large mast and a quantity of tanks about 100 miles from the coast. The mate and five hands left the wreck
of the Emma Patterson in a whaleboat, but never reached the shore. The boat was found waterlogged with the remains of the bodies. At the review, in Moore Park, there was a great display of military evolutions, ' and engineering skill with torpedoes. During the debate on the estimates, the Committee reduced the salary of the President in Council by two hundred pounds ; the Chairman of Committees one hundred ; and the Speaker's one hundred. The census shows the population of Sydney at seventy-five thousand.
