A foolish and malicious hoax, perpetrated avowedly through a " lark," came indirectly imd&y the notico of the Melbourne &ty.Bsntfv ite> otfvey Aty,. ia a caße in which a man named Denis Kennedy waa charged, on remand from Emerald Hill, with assaulting his brother-in-law, Patrick Hamilton. Kennedy had been very recently married, when an ad--1 yertisenient "Wanted a wet-mirse" was inserted in the Argus, the applicants being directed in the advertisement to Kennedy's address ; ; and the -result of this was that about 40 women with one or more babies in their arms assembled in front of Kennedy's house; The affair wasthen discovered to be a hoa?, and Kennedy believed that .the advertisement was written and iuserted by Hamilton. This created a bad feeling, which led Kennedy to commit the assault complained of upon Hamilton. In court; yesterday, Hamilton professed inability to say whether an advertisement (produced in court) for a wetnurse, exhibiting bad caligraphy and worse orthography, had been written by, hfrn. It was stated by the solicitor for the prosecution that the hoax was perpetrated "for a lark." The defendant was bound over in his own bond in L2O to keep the peace for three months, on the charge of assault. :
