Christchttrch.— The Lyttdton Times cf .Saturday last reports : — In. the grain market a limited tiade has Tbeen doing in wheat. We understand that ■rthe Glenmark and Zealandia will take a few -.thousand sacks for the English market. A great number of holders, and even some of the larger growers, would readily ship, provided they could obtain tonnage. . Sales of old wheat have been unimportant at last week's rates — say 4s or 6s B<l per cental There may have been a few small lines placed at a shade higher, but anything over 4s is rarely given except to complete shipments. Samples of new wheat are now in the market, bat buyers have not yet determined upon its Taloe. It will probably open up at 3s 8d or .3s 9d per bushel, or 6s Id to 6s 3d per cental. At these figures there is very little margin to ship with the present freights to England. The demand for oats noted in last week's report still continues. Old oats are becoming very scarce, but the new is fast coming forward, of which the greater portion this year will coDai3t of heavy milling samples. Early in the week, sales of this description were effected at 23, or 5s per cental ; but during the last few days holders have been less inclined to quit, consequently buyers had to spring, and the present market value may be quoted at 2s Id to 2s 2d, or 5s 2£d to 5s 3d per cental. The Gothenburg and Omeo sailed for Melbourne with very large cargoes of this cereal. We have heard of sales of barley at quotations ranging from 2s 6d to 2s lOd j - these are few, and only for prime malting samples. The provision market remains glutted with butter and cheese, and the only prospect of improvement is, that the dry weather will curtail the supply. Quotations are without cahnge.
